The Closet

Community

shengui (深柜) · closeted · in the closet

Metaphor for keeping one's orientation or gender identity hidden — often a rational survival strategy, not dishonesty.

The closet metaphor crossed into Chinese intact: guizi (柜子) is the closet, and being closeted is being “inside the closet.” Chinese adds a vivid extension the English lacks as a single word: shengui (深柜), the “deep closet” — hiding from virtually everyone.

The essential point: being closeted is not lying. It is very often a rational survival strategy. Where family, school, or workplace may be hostile — a live consideration for many readers in Chinese-speaking environments — concealment is self-protection, and safety comes first; waiting is allowed (see coming out and safety notes). The closet is also not binary: out to close friends, closeted to parents is an entirely normal configuration, and most people live in some version of partial outness for years. The outness inventory helps map where you actually stand.

Register note: community vernacular. Online, shengui is sometimes hurled as a taunt at people presumed to be “deeply closeted yet homophobic” — a pointedly aggressive usage.

Common misuse: speculating about whether an acquaintance or celebrity is “in the deep closet” — publicly guessing at someone’s orientation is a cousin of forced outing; and framing closeted people as lacking courage — the closet measures a person’s circumstances, not their character.
