Aromantic

Community

aromantic · aro · aroace · 无浪漫倾向

Experiencing little or no romantic attraction; romantic and sexual attraction are separate axes that need not align.

Aromantic (community shorthand: aro) describes people who experience little or no romantic attraction — falling in love rarely or never happens, and romantic relationships hold no particular pull. The key that makes this legible is the split-attraction model: romantic attraction and sexual attraction run on separate axes, and they can differ in both direction and intensity. So an aromantic heterosexual person, an aromantic asexual person (aroace), and a romantic asexual person all genuinely exist.

The Chinese rendering is still settling — 无浪漫倾向 (“no romantic inclination”) and 无浪漫吸引 (“no romantic attraction”) both circulate, and community members mostly just say “aro.”

Register note: community vocabulary in both languages; in formal Chinese writing the descriptive phrase is spelled out rather than abbreviated.

Common misuse: equating aromantic with cold or unloving. Aromantic people’s bonds can run deep — close friendships, family, and committed partnerships built outside the romance script (queerplatonic relationships) are all real intimacy. Nor is it damage from a past heartbreak or a phase before “waking up”: it names a stable inner pattern, not the residue of an experience. Telling an aro person “you’ll meet someone someday” is the same move as telling an ace person “you just haven’t met the right one” — disbelief wrapped in kindness.
