Demisexual

Demisexual people experience sexual attraction only after an emotional bond has formed. The prefix demi- means “half,” but the point is not halfness — it is the precondition: no matter how conventionally attractive a stranger is, attraction simply does not arise; only once trust and connection have grown can it appear, and even then it is a possibility, not a guarantee. Chinese uses two renderings: the calque 半性恋 (“half-sexual”) and the more literal 接触后吸引 (“attraction after contact”).

Demisexuality sits on the asexual spectrum — before a bond exists, a demisexual person’s experience matches an asexual one. Some describe it as a specific, well-defined point in the gray-asexual zone.

Common misuse: confusing it with the preference of “wanting to know someone first,” or with modesty as a virtue. The difference is mechanism: most people can feel attraction to strangers and simply choose not to act; for demisexual people the attraction itself does not exist before the bond. It describes how attraction arises, not a moral stance — so it is neither “more disciplined” nor “too picky.”
