Gray-asexual

Gray-asexual (often just “gray-A”) names the territory between asexual and allosexual: sexual attraction that shows up very rarely, or faintly, or ambiguously enough to be hard to pin down, or only under quite specific conditions. The word’s very existence makes a point — sexual attraction is not an on/off switch but a gradient, and a lot of people live in the gray. The Chinese rendering is 灰色无性恋 (huise wuxinglian, “gray asexual”), with 灰色性向 (“gray orientation”) also in circulation.

Demisexual is often described as one well-specified point in this zone: the condition is an emotional bond.

Register note: community vocabulary; “gray-A” or simply “gray” is the shorthand in both English and Chinese spaces.

Common misuse: two directions. One is medicalizing it — treating gray-A as a euphemism for “low libido, see a doctor.” It is a self-description tool, not a diagnosis, and it has no entry requirements. The other is turning ace-spectrum vocabulary into an exam — agonizing over whether one “qualifies.” These words exist to help you describe your experience: use whichever fits, switch when it stops fitting, and owe no one an application.
