In Chinese gay communities, “1” and “0” are the local equivalents of “top” and “bottom” — in-community shorthand for position preference in intimacy, with the notation usually explained as a visual pun on the digits’ shapes. Someone in between, or flexible, says “0.5” or bufen (不分, “no preference”).

Three clarifications matter more than the definition. First, it is a preference descriptor, not a required field: plenty of people don’t label themselves, preferences shift over time, and nobody on a dating app is owed an answer. Second — the big one — it has nothing to do with masculinity. A “1” is not “more of a man”; a “0” is not “effeminate.” Reading position through a masculine/feminine lens imports heterosexual scripts and gender stereotypes into gay relationships, and it is a habit the community itself increasingly questions. Third, this is insider vocabulary; wielding it outside the community to label or joke about people crosses a line quickly.

Register note: community vernacular — dating apps and casual chat. It has no place in formal or educational registers, and no relationship actually requires it.

Common misuse: mapping the gong/shou (攻受, seme/uke) conventions of BL fiction onto real people — fictional character archetypes are not user manuals for living humans; and trying to “tell” who is 1 or 0 from looks or voice — appearances reveal nothing (related myth: Can you spot someone at a glance?).
