Duoyuan Xingbie (多元性别)

Duoyuan xingbie — literally “plural genders,” usually rendered “gender diversity” — is the umbrella term of choice in Taiwan’s official and educational language. It covers roughly the same people as xingshaoshu (sexual minorities), but frames them differently: where “minority” counts heads, duoyuan (“plural, diverse”) says that sexuality and gender simply come as a spectrum, and diversity is the norm rather than the exception.

In Taiwan you meet the word everywhere, from gender-equity education in schools to government documents and NGO campaigns. Mainland readers see it less often; formal mainland writing prefers xingshaoshu or the English acronym LGBTQ+.

Register note: formal and written, with a distinctly Taiwanese flavor. Perfectly understandable on the mainland, just less idiomatic there.

Common misreading: taking it to mean only transgender or nonbinary people. It is a whole-spectrum framework covering orientation, gender identity, expression, and sex characteristics (see Gender basics).
