U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable)

U=U stands for Undetectable = Untransmittable. It names a conclusion now backed by a large body of scientific evidence: when a person living with HIV keeps their viral load suppressed to an undetectable level through antiretroviral therapy, they do not pass the virus to sexual partners.

This is not “very low risk” — it is the absence of that route of transmission. For many people it changes everything: those living with HIV can have intimate relationships, date, build serodiscordant partnerships with a safe sex life, and have healthy children. The condition is staying on treatment, keeping regular check-ups, and maintaining suppression.

Register note: U=U is both a scientific finding and a deliberately destigmatizing rallying phrase — it directly overturns the old prejudice that “person with HIV = danger.” Use it freely in community and educational settings.

Common misreading: first, hearing it as “no protection needed at all” — U=U applies specifically to HIV via sex, while other sexually transmitted infections still warrant care; second, assuming it kicks in the moment treatment starts, when in fact it requires sustained treatment and confirmed, stable undetectable results. A partner who wants to protect themselves proactively can also look into PrEP.
