SOGIE

SOGIE is an initialism for sexual orientation (who you’re drawn to), gender identity (who you know yourself to be), and gender expression (how you present yourself); add sex characteristics (the body) and you get SOGIESC. UN agencies and international human-rights documents routinely use this framework.

Its greatest value is unbundling. Everyday language tangles these things together — a boy paints his nails and people infer his orientation; someone comes out as trans and gets asked “so do you like men or women?” The axes are independent, and a person’s position on each can combine freely with the others. Register note: academic, human-rights, and policy vocabulary — rare in casual conversation. But the underlying habit of pulling the dimensions apart is useful to anyone trying to make sense of themselves.

Common misuse: assuming SOGIE applies only to sexual and gender minorities. A straight cisgender person has a sexual orientation (heterosexual), a gender identity (cisgender), and a gender expression too — SOGIE describes everyone.
