Puberty blockers

Puberty blockers are GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) analogues: drugs that pause the hormonal signals driving puberty, and with them the development of secondary sex characteristics. They are not new — pediatricians have used them for years to treat central precocious puberty.

In care for adolescents experiencing gender dysphoria, the idea is a pause button: buying time before irreversible pubertal changes, so the young person and their family can think things through with professional support. If the drugs are stopped, puberty resumes. Blockers are not hormone therapy — that is a separate, later decision — and they are certainly not surgery.

Honesty also requires saying: on long-term effects (bone density, for example, needs monitoring) and on the best criteria for use, the professional community is still accumulating evidence and having a genuine debate. In recent years some countries have tightened conditions for use in minors and strengthened assessment requirements. This is medicine’s normal deliberative process working — it neither means “blockers have been debunked” nor “anyone can use them casually.”

So the core point is plain: these are prescription drugs that require evaluation, prescription, and ongoing monitoring by a specialist team.
